Argos Fall to Warner Pacific in CCC Tournament

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The University of Providence men's soccer program fell to Warner Pacific 4-1 in the first round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament Monday afternoon.

UP had a chance in the second minute of the game, but freshman Jose Vasquez's shot was saved by the goalkeeper.

Warner Pacific (13-3-2) would strike first in the ninth minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

Argos (7-9-2) would answer with a shot by senior Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld, but it would go just high of the crossbar.

The Knights would extend their lead in the 27th minute when Brendon Leach's corner kick found Bryce McCole who headed it into the back of the net.

With a minute left in the first half, a corner kick by Schmalfeld found Vasquez inside the box, but his shot went just wide of the net. UP was outshot 8-6 in the first half.

UP came out of the second half pressuring the Knights with a cross from freshman Kabiso Gedeon, but it was unable to get through the Warner Pacific defense.

The Knights would add their third goal of the match when a free kick went off the cross bar and the rebound attempt by Warner Pacific found the back of the net.

The Argos would cut into the lead when a free kick from outside of the box by Schmalfeld found senior Kolby Hayes in front of the net to shorten the Knights' lead to two.

Warner Pacific would score another goal in the 65th minute when a cross into the box barely missed freshman Teddy Benbow's outstretched hands and found a Knights attacker for an open net goal.

Despite late pressure from the Argos, they were unable to find the back of the net falling to Warner Pacific 4-1.

Head coach Will Hander on his team's performance stated, "That was a tough loss. We played the way we wanted but unfortunately made too many mistakes against a very good team. I wish Troy and WPU the best on their attempt to get back to the national tournament."
