GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- The University of Providence women's wrestling program went 3-0 at the Battle of the Rockies duals on Saturday.
The Argos opened the duals with 45-3 and 37-11 victories over Dakota Wesleyan and Umpqua Community College, respectively. Head coach
Matt Atwood on his team's performance stated, "Our dual performance last night was nothing short of dominant, we have a lot of things to continue to work on and get better, but we are heading in the right direction. On Friday we won six out of ten weight classes, while we held a few of our girls out until the duals, we could have potentially won even more of the classes. I enjoy having this home tournament because it gives all our girls an opportunity to not only compete but to compete in front of a home crowd who doesn't get to see them very often."
Following a pair of forfeits versus DWU, #6 freshman
Isabelle Asuncion pinned Ashden Welty to put the Argos ahead by 15. Following a TF win by freshman
Kivah Caballero, UP had another four pins with freshman
Audrey Darnell, redshirt freshman
Kailey Rees, sophomore
Kassidy Sigda, and senior
Joji Miner-Ho picking up victories.
In the win over UCC, the Argos followed an opening forfeit with three straight wins by tech fall. Freshman
Kayla Shota, Asuncion, and Cabellero picked up their second victories of the day to put the Argos ahead 17-1. Rees and Sigda would follow Cabellero with their second pins of the evening to make it two for two on the day.
Redshirt freshman
Kaianne Sabagala made it three straight pins for the Argos and #7
Lexi Tupuola capped off the victory pinning the #6 NJCAA ranked wrestler. Atwood on Tupuola stated, "Lexi is starting to find her stride and was a blast for the crowd this weekend, she finished the weekend undefeated, most in dominant fashion, and picked up a hard-fought win in the Menlo dual! I'm excited to watch her the rest of this season as she completes her senior year run!"
In the Battle of the Rockies finale the Argos defeated #2 Menlo College 31-11. #1
Erin Hikiji opened the contest pinning Angelique Cervantes within the first 30 seconds to put UP in front. Atwood on Hikiji stated, "I'm not sure how long Erin was on the mat this weekend but if you blinked you missed each of her matches. She's continuing to prove why she's #1 in the country."
#7
Paige Morales would follow by defeating the #2 ranked 101lb wrestler for the second time by tech fall over the weekend. "Morales rebounded really well this weekend, she won all of her matches on Friday and teched the #2 101 pounder in the country not once but twice."
Freshman
Ani Arias also built off her first-place performance from Friday defeating Hayden Fry 11-0. Despite losing the 123 match, #6 senior
Paige Respicio picked up her second victory of the night pinning Valynn Kwann. "At 130 it was fun to see
Paige Respicio back on the mat picking up a win against Menlo after recovering from her foot surgery last summer and Ani at 116 had a great weekend coming back strong off an injury and winning all of her matches this weekend."
Following a forfeit win by #2 junior
Waipuilani Estrella-Beauchamp, #10
Sadie Antoque defeated #15 Alexandra Lopez 10-0 to cap off the 35-16 victory. "Sadie had a great tournament Friday, we got caught in a bad position in the tournament, but she rebounded well and had a great dual performance against a ranked opponent from Menlo."
The Argos will be back in action Dec. 10 when they visit Naperville, Illinois for the North Central Open. Wrestlers will compete throughout the day beginning at 8:00 a.m. (MDT).
