MISSOULA, Mont. - Azia Umphrey's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning brought home Gracie Fleming who led off the inning with a triple and the University of Providence softball team walked off the University of British Columbia to earn the first Cascade Conference win of the season.
Fleming's third hit of the game put her in scoring position and led to Umphrey's heroics after Ryen Palmer had struck out. The win snapped a season-opening 13-game losing streak, and 15-game skid going back to last spring.
The T-Birds scored twice in the first on a Keona Nordquist single that scored both runs and twice more in the third on a Kaitlyn Kim triple. The Argos answered with a single run in the second and scored three runs in the fifth inning with Karlie David driving in a run with a double and a Macy Mangold RBI single. Mangold scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Gabby Dorval had three hits for British Columbia as did Nordquist who also drove in two runs. Shae Sever took the loss, pitching the last two innings allowing four hits and the winning run.
In addition to Fleming's three knocks, Mangold also collected three hits while David and Sydney Wilting each added two hits. Deven Creech picked up the win in relief, tossing four innings while allowing three hits with four k's and four walks. Head coach Joey Egan says the team has been building towards this moment, "I knew we would get a win soon the way we have been playing. The extra time in the batting cages has paid off and I could not be more proud of the effort. Now they (the Argos) know we can win and see their hard work come to fruition. The sky is the limit for this team and you saw that in the second game yesterday (a 7-5 loss) and again today in the win. I am looking forward to getting back to work this week and continuing to grow both on and off the field."
In the second game, UBC (13-7, 7-4) broke open a close game in the fifth scoring five times on six hits to win 8-1 in a non-conference game.
Providence sits 1-14 overall, 1-8 in Cascade play and will be on the road next weekend traveling to Eugene, Oregon to take on Bushnell. Live stats will be available at www.upargos.com.
