MISSOULA, Mont. - It may have been swept in the three games of the Cascade Conference series, but the University of Providence softball team proved to themselves that they can play with and beat anyone in the NAIA after the Argos picked up a 9-5 non-conference win over No. 1-ranked Oregon Tech Monday in Missoula.
Playing at Grizzly Softball Field, the Argos scored four runs in the first inning, two more in the second and added a three spot in the sixth to snap the Owls 25-game winning streak. Deven Creech went the distance holding OIT to six hits while allowing five runs and walking eight.
Taylor Mathews tied the game in the bottom of the first at one with a solo home run from the leadoff spot then Azia-Rain Umphrey gave the Argos a lead they would not relinquish with a three-run bomb to cap the scoring in the first and giving Providence a 4-1 lead.
The Owls scored a run in the second before the Argos added two more runs on a bases-loaded walk to drive in a run from Macy Mangold. That was followed by Umphrey taking one for the team getting hit by a pitch to drive in another run. Oregon Tech scored three unanswered runs to pull to within 6-5 before the Argos added to their lead with a Creech double that scored Karlie David, and Umphrey added an RBI double to plate Creech. A Makayla Hernandez single scored another run to cap the scoring.
Providence pounded OIT pitching to the tune of 15 hits with Mathews, Ryen Palmer, and Karlie David each getting three hits. Creech had two hits while Umphrey finished with five RBI.
Head coach Joey Egan said despite the CCC sweep, the non-conference win was a defining moment for the program, "Man! What a great end to the series. We battled with the top ranked team in the country for two days and came up with a huge win in Argo program history.
"Losing three in conference hurts, but the team battled and proved they can compete with the best of the best in the country. Now we will get back to work for another long road trip this weekend."
Providence dropped the first game of the day 11-2 in six innings and sees its record improve to 6-26 overall, 3-20 in league play. The Argos will travel to Kirkland, Washington to take on Northwest University Friday and Saturday.
