BILLINGS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team visited Rocky Mountain College for their conference opener Friday afternoon.
The Argos (2-3) had a chance early when freshman
Geovanni Lugo sent a cross into the box, but the shot by freshman
Kabiso Gedeon would be deflected away just wide of the net by the RMC (3-0-2) defenders.
UP would finally break through after a Lugo cross found freshman
Jose Vasquez for a header that beat the goalkeeper to give the Argos a 1-0 lead.
The Argos had another chance late in the first half when senior
Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld put a perfect ball down the sideline for Gedeon who centered it back to freshman
Liam Vaux, but RMC would keep the score 1-0 courtesy of a diving stop by the goalkeeper.
The Battlin' Bears threatened late in the first half and would tie the game in the 45th minute after a corner kick was headed in by RMC.
In the second half RMC broke the tie in the 52nd minute when a cross into the box found Igor Soares and his shot found the back of the net making it 2-1 Battlin' Bears.
The Argos threatened late with a close shot by Vaux but were unable to find the equalizer, losing the match 2-1. Head coach
Will Hander stated, "We had a good first half but were unable to make the adjustments in the second. We played well, but need to pay well for 90 minutes".
The Argos return to action Sunday, Sept. 17 when they visit Walla Walla University for another conference matchup. The first touch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
