COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The University of Providence men's soccer team faced off in conference matchup versus Walla Walla University Sunday afternoon.
The Argos (3-3) pressured early on taking eight shots but were unable to get past the Wolves (0-3) stingy defense.
UP broke through in the 31
st minute when senior
Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld received freshman
Hugo Gil's pass and beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. The Argos outshot Walla Walla 11-3 in the first half.
Early in the second half the Argos had a free kick from just outside the box, but it was batted away by the Walla Walla defenders.
UP would extend their lead in the 65
th minute when senior
Kolby Hayes found freshman
Jose Vasquez for his team leading third goal of the season.
Despite a late Wolves goal in the 89
th minute the UP defense would remain strong to pick up the Argos first conference win of the season 2-1. Head coach
Will Hander stated, "Proud of the guys. It's a long road trip for us and it was a good experience for our new players to be exposed to that. We took better care of the ball and created some great chances. We definitely look forward to playing on our home pitch next weekend."
The Argos return to action Friday, Sept. 22 when they host Multnomah University. The first touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Argo Field.
