Argos Defeat Walla Walla to Pick Up First Conference Win

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The University of Providence men's soccer team faced off in conference matchup versus Walla Walla University Sunday afternoon.

The Argos (3-3) pressured early on taking eight shots but were unable to get past the Wolves (0-3) stingy defense.

UP broke through in the 31st minute when senior Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld received freshman Hugo Gil's pass and beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. The Argos outshot Walla Walla 11-3 in the first half.

Early in the second half the Argos had a free kick from just outside the box, but it was batted away by the Walla Walla defenders.

UP would extend their lead in the 65th minute when senior Kolby Hayes found freshman Jose Vasquez for his team leading third goal of the season.

Despite a late Wolves goal in the 89th minute the UP defense would remain strong to pick up the Argos first conference win of the season 2-1. Head coach Will Hander stated, "Proud of the guys. It's a long road trip for us and it was a good experience for our new players to be exposed to that. We took better care of the ball and created some great chances. We definitely look forward to playing on our home pitch next weekend."

The Argos return to action Friday, Sept. 22 when they host Multnomah University. The first touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Argo Field.
