Argos Defeat MSUN in Five Set Thriller

HAVRE, Mont. – The University of Providence volleyball program defeated Montana State University Northern 3-2 in a five-set thriller Wednesday night.

In the first set the Northern Lights (8-9) scored nine straight points to jump out to a 12-3 lead. MSUN would not let up scoring seven of the final eight points to take the first set 25-13.

The second set was back and forth with each team trading runs. After the Northern Lights scored four in a row to take a 5-4 lead, the Argos (9-8) stormed back scoring six of seven points behind a pair of kills by junior Mady Hoerner to make it 10-6. There would be four ties the rest of the set until senior Zoe Naugle had three kills to push the Argo lead to 20-16. UP would pull away behind a pair of kills by junior Nina Janjic to take the set 25-19. Junior Allyah Tokelau led the way in the second set with five kills.

In the third set a pair of kills by Tokelau and Janjic gave the Argos an early 10-3 lead. MSUN would respond by scoring seven of the next eight to tie the match at 11. Neither team could gain an edge of more than four until the Argos scored five in a row to close out the set 25-20. Janjic led the way for UP with six kills.

The fourth set saw the Northern Lights jump out to an early 8-2 lead and they would maintain that edge throughout taking the fourth set 25-15.

In the deciding set neither team could gain a lead by more than two until MSUN scored seven of eight points to take a 10-6 lead. The Argos would respond by scoring five of six behind kills by sophomore Ryann Eddins and Naugle to tie the match at 11. The set would be tied at 12 and 13 before kills by Naugle and redshirt freshman Cabry Taylor put away the Northern Lights 15-13.

Naugle was the lead attacker for the Argos with 16 kills and Tokelau and Janjic added 13 and 12, respectively. Junior Nati Slazynska added 34 assists and senior Taylor Christensen had 26 digs. Defensively, Naugle and Taylor had five total blocks each for the Argos and senior Jenna Thorne and Eddins had three apiece.

The Argos will be back in action Sept. 29 when they visit Carroll College. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in Helena, Mont.
