Argos Hand Carroll College 10th Straight Loss

Box Score HELENA, Mont. – The University of Providence volleyball program handed Carroll College their 10th straight loss defeating them 3-1 Friday night.

In the first set neither team could gain a lead by more than two until a block by senior Zoe Naugle and a kill by senior Jenna Thorne gave the Argos (10-8) an 11-8 lead. Carroll (5-14) would respond by scoring four of five points to tie the match at 14. The match would see three more ties before kills by Naugle and Thorne gave the Argos a 20-17 edge. The Fighting Saints would not go away scoring the next three points to tie the match at 20. UP would score five of the next seven points behind back-to-back kills by junior Allyah Tokelau to take the first set 25-21. Senior Jenna Thorne led the way with six kills in the opening set.

The second set saw both teams trade runs culminating in an 11-11 tie. After both teams traded points the Fighting Saints scored four in a row to take a 21-16 lead. UP would respond by scoring four of five points behind kills by sophomore Ryann Eddins, Tokelau, and a block by Thorne and Naugle to bring the set within one. Despite tying the match at 23, the Fighting Saints scored the final two points to take the second set 25-23.

The Argos jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the third set behind a pair of kills by Naugle and junior Mady Hoerner. UP would keep their momentum scoring four in a row to extend their lead to eight. The Argos would maintain their lead winning the third set 25-13. Naugle, Hoerner, and Tokelau had three kills each in the third set.

In the fourth set the Fighting Saints got out to a 7-2 lead but the Argos would respond scoring seven of nine points to tie the set at 10. There would be seven ties the rest of the way until three straight by Carroll gave the Fighting Saints a 22-19 lead. Despite Carroll taking a 24-21 lead the Argos scored five straight points to win the set 26-24 and the match 3-1. Eddins and Tokelau led the Argos with three kills each in the fourth set.

Naugle and Tokelau led the Argos with 13 kills apiece and junior Nati Slazynska added 28 assists. Defensively, senior Taylor Christensen had 27 digs and Naugle added four total blocks. Naugle now has 326 blocks in her career as an Argo which places her second all-time in career blocks.

The Argos will be back in action Oct. 5 when they host Rocky Mountain College. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
