GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer program defeated The Evergreen State College 2-1 Friday afternoon.
The Argos (2-12) took control of the game from the start, but their over aggressiveness proved costly as a red card for UP 15 minutes in had the Argos down a man for the final 75 minutes.
Six minutes after the red card sophomore Jose Gonzalez found a streaking senior Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld who beat his defender and found the back of the net to put UP ahead 1-0.
UP would continue to control the game and with seven minutes remaining in the half, Schmalfeld forced a turnover by the Geoducks (3-9-1) and then buried his shot to put UP ahead 2-0.
The Argos controlled the game throughout the second half, and despite a goal with 30 seconds remaining from the Geoducks, UP's defense stood tall as the Argos defeated Evergreen State 2-1.
The Argos will be back in action Oct. 26, when they host Northwest University. The first touch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (MST) in Great Falls, Mont.
