OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The University of Providence women's basketball program fell to the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) 65-61 Thursday night.
The Drovers (1-0) scored the first five points of the game but a 6-0 run behind layups from sophomore Eliannah Ramirez and Keanna Salave'a put the Argos (0-1) in front 6-5.
Following a basket from Science and Arts three straight three-pointers from sophomore Monique Carter and junior Ainsley Thurber extended the Argo lead to eight with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Neither side would add a basket the rest of the first as UP went into the break ahead 16-9.
The Drovers scored the first five points of the second quarter but a 7-0 run from the Argos put UP ahead 27-13 midway through the second. Â Science and Arts slowly cut into the Argo lead the rest of the quarter as UP went into the break leading 30-20.
The third quarter was back-and-forth throughout with neither side grabbing any advantage, but the Drovers would outscore the Argos 17-6 in the fourth quarter to take a 52-48 lead with one minute remaining.
The Argos were able to get a clutch layup from Salave'a and free throws down the stretch to tie the game at 52 going into overtime.
In overtime the Argos got on the board first off a three-pointer from sophomore Taliah Lee, and following a layup from the Drovers, a three from Salave'a put UP ahead by five with two minutes remaining.
Science and Arts responded with a 6-0 run to take a one-point lead and despite a late three attempt from the Argos, UP fell to the Drovers 65-61.
The Argos will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 2 when they face Mid-American Christian University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (MST) in Oklahoma, City.Â
