HAVRE, Mont. -- The University of Providence volleyball program pulled off the reverse sweep over Montana Western to win the Frontier Conference Tournament Saturday night.
In the first set against the Bulldogs (22-9) the Argos (25-6) scored the first three points but Montana Western slowly cut into the lead tying the set at eight. Both teams would go back and forth until six straight from the Bulldogs put Montana Western ahead 21-14. UP would answer with three straight but could not close the gap as the Bulldogs took the first set 25-19.
The second set was back-and-forth early but a 8-0 run from the Bulldogs put Montana Western in front by nine. The Bulldogs continued their momentum the rest of the set taking the second 25-18.
In the third set neither side could grab a lead by more than two until a 6-1 run from the Bulldogs gave Montana Western a 16-11 edge. The Argos responded immediately going on a 7-1 run to take a 21-19 lead. The Bulldogs would tie the set at 24 but kills from sophomore
Cabry Taylor and junior
Bella Thompson secured the third set for UP 26-24.
UP carried their momentum into the fourth set scoring eight of the first nine points behind kills from juniors
Franny Martins and
Ryann Eddins. Following a short run from the Bulldogs, UP went on an 11-1 run to take a commanding 21-8 lead. Â The Bulldogs would add another point but a kill from Eddins secured the fourth set for UP 25-9.
In the deciding set the Argos got out to an early 8-3 lead off a pair of kills from Taylor and junior
Sadie Giles, and despite a late run from the Bulldogs, a kill from Taylor secured the fifth set for UP 15-11, and the match 3-2.
Eddins and Taylor led the way for the Argos with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Junior
Bella Thompson had 47 assists and senior
Ava Saiers added a team high 32 digs.
The Argos are back in action Saturday, Nov. 23 for the first round of the NAIA National Championship.Â
