CHANDLER, Ariz. – The University of Providence men's basketball program fell to Park University Gilbert 79-76 Monday night.

The Argos (4-6) scored the first points of the game off a layup from senior Antoine Boyd Jr., and following a three-pointer from the Buccaneers (3-7) a jumper from senior Nikolajs Atanasovs and a three-pointer from senior Jamil Bowles put UP ahead 7-3.

Park University added a basket to cut the lead to three, but a pair of jumpers from senior Mike Wright Jr. and Bowles second three of the game extended the Argo lead to 11.

Over the next 10 minutes the Buccaneers outscored the Argos 23-8 to take their first lead of the game 31-27, but a three from freshman Quinn Swanson made it a one-point game with five minutes remaining in the half.

UP continued their momentum ending the half on a 17-6 run behind threes from juniors Brendan Redhead and Ryan Chavez to go into the break leading 47-37.

A free throw from the Buccaneers opened the scoring in the second half, but a layup on the other end from Wright Jr. put the Argos ahead by 11.

Both teams would trade baskets over the next 10 minutes until a 12-1 run from Park Gilbert cut the Argo lead to three with just over six minutes remaining.

The Buccaneers continued their momentum taking a one-point lead with one-minute remaining, but a free throw from the Argos tied the game with 36 seconds left.

Park Gilbert hit a three with five seconds left to take a three-point lead, and despite the Argos getting off a shot for the tie, UP fell to the Buccaneers 79-76.

The Argos will be back in action tomorrow, Dec. 17, for their final game of the Cactus Classic in Chandler, Ariz. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (MST) versus #4 Arizona Christian.
