Argos Defeat #5 Bellevue to Force One-Set Tiebreaker

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The University of Providence volleyball program swept #5 Bellevue University on the final day of Pool Play at the NAIA Tournament Friday.

In the first set against the Bruins (30-4) neither side could grab a lead by more than three until the Argos (27-7) scored eight in a row behind three aces from freshman Isabelle Cahall to put UP ahead 12-7. Despite Bellevue cutting the lead to one late, a kill from junior Franny Martins secured the first set for UP 25-22.

The Argos jumped out to an early 5-1 lead off kills from juniors Sadie Giles, Bella Green, and sophomore Cabry Taylor, but the Bruins answered with a 5-1 run of their own to tie the set at seven. Both teams went back-and-forth the rest of the way, but the Argos scored four of the last five points of the set off kills from Green, Taylor, and sophomore Martyna Fiedler to take the second 25-23.

In the third set both teams traded points until a 9-0 run from the Argos behind a pair of aces from Giles put UP in front 19-12. The Bruins quickly responded going on a 5-0 run, but the Argos scored the final four points of the set to secure the third 25-19, and the match 3-0.

Fiedler and Taylor led the way with 11 and 10 kills while hitting .458 and .417, respectively. Junior Bella Thompson tallied 33 assists and senior Ava Saiers added a team high 24 digs.

The Argos are back in action tonight for a one-set tiebreaker against either #20 Marian or #5 Bellevue for a trip to the NAIA Quarterfinals. Following the matches at 6:30 p.m. (MST), Bellevue and Marian will play a one-set tiebreaker with the winner facing the Argos at the Tyson Events Center.
