Nava Jr., Hobbs, Buday Take Home Titles at CCC Tournament

LaGrande, Ore – The University of Providence men's wrestling team finished second overall and brought home three individual titles at the CCC Tournament Saturday.

Head coach Steve Komac on his team's performance stated, "We have been focusing hard on a full team effort up and down the lineup as well as performing to our ability on big stages and we are very pleased with our effort as a team and our continued growth. We qualified 10 of 12 wrestlers we entered and that is something we can feel very good about."

Sophomore Abel Nava Jr. was the first Argo crowned CCC Champion defeating Danill Gorshkov 4-0 in the semifinals and then finished his day defeating NaKoda Siegel 4-1 by SV to take home the 174 title.

At 197, sophomore Sawyer Hobbs also took first place at the CCC Tournament. Hobbs pinned both of his opponents on Saturday, finishing Jay Smith in 6:51 in the semifinals and pinning Carl Hansen in 2:10 to take home the Championship.

KC Buday finished the night at the CCC Tournament with another championship for the Argos. Buday went 2-0 on Saturday defeating Kenneth Copley 4-1 by SV and defeating Antonio Dacosta 3-2 to bring home the 285 title.

Badley was also a top-three finisher at the CCC Tournament. Badley defeated Isaiah Twait 10-2 in the semifinals but fell in the championship to finish second. By winning his semifinal match, Badley secured a berth to the NAIA National Championship.

The Argos also had four other National Qualifiers in redshirt freshman Jalen Vladic, sophomore Bridger Hall, redshirt junior Caleb Werner, and sophomore Ethan DeRoche.

Vladic fell in the semifinals but defeated Travis Thorpe 6-4 to secure his bid to the National Championship. Hall went 3-0 on Saturday pinning Joseph Andrade in 2:15, defeating Justin Windauer 11-6, and pinning Aaron Gandara in 1:05 to finish in third place.

Werner was able to fight his way to the seventh-place match where he pinned Jett Swain to secure his berth to the National Championship, and DeRoche defeated Sven Lukner 4-1 to finish fifth to qualify for the National Championship.

Freshman Pig Hobbs, redshirt senior Jordan Komac, Nava Jr., and S. Hobbs secured their bids to the National Championship on Friday by advancing to the semifinals.

The Argos will be back in action Feb. 29 for Day one at the NAIA National Championship in Wichita, Kansas.
