GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball program advanced to the semifinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament defeating Rocky Mountain College 95-87.
The Battlin' Bears (12-17) scored the first basket of the game off a three-pointer but a 7-0 run behind jumpers from senior Jevon Burton and senior Sam Vining gave the Argos (15-14) a 7-3 lead.
Following a layup from Rocky Mountain College a pair of baskets from Burton increased the Argo lead to seven.
The Battlin' Bears scored five in a row to shorten the Argo lead to two, but a three from Vining made it 17-12 seven minutes into the half.
Each side would trade baskets until free throws from senior Davien Harris-Williams and back-to-back threes from senior Caleb Currington increased the Argo lead to 12.
Both teams would go back-and-forth until a 6-0 run from RMC shortened the Argo lead to four with five minutes left in the half.
The Battlin' Bears slowly cut into the Argo lead the rest of the half as the Argos took a 43-39 lead into the break.
The Argos would score the first points of the second half off free throws from senior Jake Olsen, but a three-pointer on the other end from RMC made it a three-point game.
The Argos would push the lead back out to eight after an and one from Olsen and a jumper from Harris-Williams made it 50-42.
Following a layup from the Battlin' Bears, a 7-0 run behind a jumper from senior Eric Milner and a three from Harris-Williams extended the Argo lead to 13.
Rocky Mountain College would not go away answering with a 9-2 run of their own but and ones from Harris-Williams and Olsen made it 64-53 with 11 minutes remaining.
Both teams would go basket for basket until a 5-0 run from RMC made it a four-point game.
Following a Harris-Williams layup the Battlin' Bears would shorten the Argo lead to two, but a free throw from Olsen and a jumper from Reed kept the Argos ahead by five with five minutes left.
Neither team was able to put together a run with each team making baskets until free throws from Reed and a layup from Olsen made it 93-86.
Despite late pressure from Rocky Mountain College, the Argos held on to defeat the Battlin' Bears 95-87. Harris-Williams led the way with 24 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, and Olsen added 19 points in 22 minutes. Â
The Argos will be back in action tomorrow versus Carroll College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Pacific Steel & Recycling Arena in Great Falls, Mont.
