JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- The University of Providence
men's soccer team split in their pair of contests falling to the University of Jamestown 4-0 and defeating Dakota Wesleyan 2-1.
The Tigers (0-2) had the first chance of the game, but the shot by Dakota Wesleyan was saved by sophomore
Thomas Sine.
A few minutes later the Argos (1-1) would threaten but senior
Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld's shot hit the crossbar and was then kicked away by the Tiger defenders.
UP would continue to pressure until sophomore
Gino Badalow found Schmalfeld down the sideline who was able to beat the defender and bury his shot to give the Argos a 1-0 lead.
Neither side would threaten the rest of the half as UP went into the break leading by one.
Following a pair of corner kicks from the Argos to open the second half, the Tigers were able to add the equalizer in the 72nd minute tying the game at one.
A few minutes later the Tigers would keep the ball in the offensive zone, but Sine was able to ward off the Dakota Wesleyan attacks keeping the game tied at one.
With just under a minute remaining, sophomore
Santi Jaramillo Ortiz beat his defender and shot a rocket off the side of the goal and in to give the Argos a 2-1 lead.
UP would ward off the Tigers for the remaining minute and a half as the Argos defeated Dakota Wesleyan 2-1.
The Argos will be back in action Friday, Aug. 30 when they host Whitworth University. First touch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (MST) in Great Falls, Mont. Â
