GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- The University of Providence volleyball program defeated The Evergreen State College 3-1 Saturday to finish The Gibson Hotel Volleyball Classic sponsored by Holiday Motor Coach 3-0.
In the first set versus the Geoducks (0-4) the Argos (7-0) scored the first five points of the set behind a pair of aces from junior
Bella Thompson and a kill from senior
Nina Janjic. UP would continue to grow their lead the rest of the way as the Argos took the first set 25-15.
The second set was more of the same as the Argos jumped out to an 8-3 lead forcing an Evergreen timeout. Following three straight from the Geoducks, the Argos responded with an 11-1 run and would not look back taking the second set 25-11. Â
The third set was back-and-forth with neither team gaining a lead by more than three until the Geoducks took advantage of an Argo mistake, followed by a kill from Yasmin Dilworth gave the Geoducks the third set 25-21.
UP came out on fire in the fourth set scoring the first eight points of the set behind kills from Janjic and sophomore
Martyna Fiedler. Evergreen would respond with a 3-1 run but the Argos momentum could not be stopped as they won the fourth set 25-11 and the match 3-1. Fiedler and junior
Bella Green led the way with eight kills and Thompson added 39 assists and 13 digs.
The Argos are back in action Aug. 30-31 when they travel to Omaha, Neb. for the CSM Labor Day Classic. UP will face #2 Northwestern in their opening match at Noon (MST).
