Argos Defeat #6 Midland on Day Two of CSM Labor Day Classic

OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Providence volleyball program went 2-0 on Saturday at the CSM Labor Day Classic defeating #6 Midland and Grandview University 3-0.

In the first set against #6 Midland both sides traded points early but five straight from the Argos behind kills from sophomore Cabry Taylor gave UP an 8-3 edge. The Warriors would answer to bring the set within two but a 6-1 run behind a pair of kills from senior Nina Janjic put UP ahead 17-10. The Argos cruised the rest of the way taking the first set 25-17.

The second set was back-and-forth with the Warriors grabbing an early lead, but the Argos would slowly inch their way back until the set was tied at 20. The Argos would continue their momentum with three straight blocks by Taylor, junior Bella Thompson, and junior Ryann Eddins to secure the second set for UP 25-21.

The Argos scored five of the first seven points of the third set, but the Warriors would slowly cut into the lead tying the set at six. Midland extended their lead out to four, but the Argos answered with an 8-2 run behind kills from Taylor and Janjic to give UP a 19-17 advantage. UP would score three of the next four, and despite a late run from the Warriors, UP took the third set 25-23 and the match 3-0. Janjic led the way for UP with 10 kills and Thompson added 34 assists.

In the first set against Grandview the Argos took control early jumping out to 9-1 lead behind kills from Janjic and Eddins. The Vikings would respond with a 6-1 run, but the Argos scored nine of the last ten points of the set to run away with the first 25-11.

In set two the Argos continued their momentum with kills from junior Franny Martins pushing UP out to a 6-1 lead. Both sides would trade runs until the Vikings cut the UP lead to three. Following an Argos timeout, kills by junior Sadie Lott and sophomore Martyna Fiedler secured the second set for UP 25-19.

In the third set versus Grandview UP took advantage of Vikings mistakes to grab an 11-5 lead. UP would continue to extend their lead, and despite a late run from Grandview, the Argos took the final set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
