PORTALND, Ore. –
Three second half goals pushed the Argos over Warner Pacific for the first time since 2018 Friday afternoon.
The Argos (3-3) had the first chance of the game when senior
Geovanni Lugo found freshman
Noah Watson whose bending shot went just over the goalkeeper's outstretched hands for his first goal of the season. Â Â
Midway through the first half the Argos had another chance when senior
Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld found Lugo, but his shot was blocked by the Knights (5-3) defense.
In the 30
th minute the Knights would find the equalizer when a shot from outside the box was headed in by a Warner Pacific attacker to tie the game at one.
Just before half the Knights would add another goal after a corner kick was batted around and shot into the back of the net to give Warner Pacific a 2-1 lead going into the break.
The Argos would pressure out of halftime when freshman
Jose Gonzalez drew a penalty in the box and senior
Bryan Olivera buried the penalty kick to tie the game at two.
A couple minutes later the Argos would take the lead when Gonzalez's shot was blocked, but he got his own rebound and beat the goalkeeper to put UP ahead 3-2.
The Argos would continue their momentum scoring again in the 60
th minute when off a Schmalfeld corner kick senior
Vincent Stoppel buried his shot to give UP a two-goal lead.
Warner Pacific would threaten late, but the Argos defense stood strong as the Argos defeated the Knights for the first time since 2018.
Head coach
Will Hander on his team's performance stated, "That was a great game. We had a game plan, and the guys executed it and we were finally able to get a win on Warner Pacific. I'm so proud of the guys and the way they played."
The Argos will be back in action tomorrow Sept. 28 when they face Multnomah. The first touch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (MST) in Portland, Ore.
