Argos Fall to Life Pacific in Season Opener

SAN DIMAS, Calif. – The University of Providence men's basketball program fell to Life Pacific 69-66 in the season opener Thursday night.

The Argos (0-1) scored the first points of the game behind a layup from junior Marcus Lawson, but the Warriors (1-0) answered with a three on the other end to give Life Pacific a 3-2 lead.

Life Pacific extended the lead out to seven over the first four minutes, but a pair of baskets from junior Marvel Chambers Jr. and a three from junior Jermaine Rogers II tied the game at 11.

The Argos continued their momentum over the next 10 minutes with a layup from senior Brendan Redhead and a three from junior Ryan Chavez to put UP in front 29-20.

UP saw their lead increase to 14 off a layup from junior Preston Condie with just over a minute left in the half, but a layup from the Warriors cut the Argo lead to 12 heading into the break. Chambers Jr. led the way for the Argos in the first half with 14 points and six rebounds on 5-9 shooting from the field.

The Warriors scored the first basket of the second half, and following a free throw from Condie, a layup from Life Pacific brought the game within eight.

Over the next five minutes the Warriors cut the lead down to two, but layups from Chambers Jr. and senior Jakub Lloyd put the Argos in front 49-41 with 13 minutes remaining.

Life Pacific continued to answer slowly cutting into the Argo lead forcing a tie at 58, but a 4-0 run from UP behind layups from Lloyd and Rogers II put the Argos ahead 62-58 with just over four minutes remaining.

Both teams traded baskets over the next three minutes, but the Warriors ended the game on a 7-0 run, and despite a game tying attempt from Lloyd, the Argos fell to Life Pacific 69-66.

Chambers Jr. led all scorers with 24 points and nine rebounds while Lloyd added 11 points and two blocks.

The Argos will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 25 when they head to Santa Clarita, Calif. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. versus #9 Master's University.
