SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The University of Providence men's basketball program fell to #9 The Master's University 93-85 Saturday night.
The Argos (0-2) scored the first eight points of the game behind a layup from junior Marcus Lawson, and threes from Lawson and junior Preston Condie, but the Mustangs (1-1) answered with a 16-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 16-10 edge.
The Master's slowly extended their lead the rest of the half but layups from sophomore Quinn Swanson and Lawson cut the advantage to 16 heading into the break.
The Mustangs scored the first six points of the second half, and following baskets from both sides, a three from The Master's put the Mustangs in front 65-43.
UP did not go away, cutting the lead down to eight over the next 10 minutes behind threes from senior Ryan Chavez and junior Jermaine Rogers II.
Both teams traded points over the next five minutes but layups from Lawson, Swanson, and free throws from junior Marvel Chambers Jr. made it 84-79 with just over a minute left.
The Master's quickly extended their lead to nine, and despite a late three from Rogers, the Argos fell to the Mustangs 93-85.
Three Argos reached double-digit scoring with Ryan Chavez at 18 points, Marcus Lawson added 16, and Marvel Chambers Jr. scored 12.
The Argos will be back in action Friday, Oct. 31 when they host Bushnell University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Great Falls, Mont.
