Argos Dominate Jaguars in Home Opener

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's basketball program defeated Texas A&M San Antonio 70-53 Friday night.  

The Argos (1-0) scored the first baskets of the game off a three-pointer from junior Eliannah Ramirez and following a basket from the Jaguars (0-1), a three-pointer from junior Brooke Dial and a jumper from senior Camryn Cartwright put UP ahead 8-2.

Texas A&M San Antonio quickly brought the game within two, but a three-pointer from Cartwright and layups from Dial and senior Ainsley Thurber gave the Argos a 15-9 edge.

Both teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter until a three-pointer and jumper from senior Katie Fleming put the Argos ahead 23-13 heading into the break.

Each side went back-and-forth throughout the second quarter, but a layup from Dial ended the half for the Argos with a 32-20 lead.

Following baskets from both teams to open the second half, a 9-0 run from the Argos behind layups from Thurber and freshman Layne Rogel extended the UP lead to 19.

The Jaguars slowly cut into the lead for the rest of the quarter ending the third on a 10-2 run to make it 50-38 heading into the fourth.

Both teams traded baskets to begin the fourth until 11 straight from the Argos off a layup from Dial and a three from Fleming put UP in front 66-44 with four minutes remaining.

The Argos cruised the rest of the way with a jumper from senior Sofia Mokofisi securing the Argos 70-53 win over the Jaguars.

Dial led the way for the Argos with 22 points and 10 rebounds; Fleming added 14 points while Thurber scored 11.

The Argos will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 1 when they host Bushnell University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Great Falls, Mont.
