GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program swept MSU-Northern Thursday night for their eighth straight victory over the Skylights.
In the first set neither side could grab a lead by more than two until six straight from the Skylights (9-9) put MSU-Northern ahead 11-7. The Argos (19-1) answered with nine straight of their own behind three aces from senior
Sadie Giles and a kill from
Franny Martins to take a 16-11 lead. Despite the Skylights bringing the set within two, UP scored seven of the last nine with a block from senior
Bella Thompson and Martins securing the first set 25-19.
The second set was back-and-forth with neither team taking control until a 5-2 run from the Skylights put MSU-Northern in front 18-15. The Argos responded with six straight behind kills from senior
Kiyana Faupula and junior
Martyna Fiedler, but a 5-1 run from the Skylights gave MSU-Northern a 23-22 edge. The set would see ties at 24, 25, and 26 but the Argos scored four of the last five with a block from junior
Cabry Taylor taking the second for UP 28-26.
The Argos got out to an early 11-6 lead in the third set off kills from Faupula and Fiedler, but the Skylights would not go away tying the set at 14. Each side would trade points but UP never relinquished the lead the rest of the way ending the set on a 6-2 run with a pair of kills from Faupula securing the third set for the Argos 25-20, and the match 3-0.
Fiedler and Green led the way for the Argos with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior
Bella Thompson totaled 38 assists, and senior
Sadie Giles added a team high 20 digs.
The Argos will be back in action Friday, Oct. 10 when they host Rocky Mountain College. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Great Falls, Mont.
