HELENA, Mont. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program swept Montana Western in the quarterfinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon.
In the first set the Bulldogs (13-17) got out to an early 5-1 lead but the Argos (29-2) slowly clawed back forcing a tie at 10. UP continued their momentum with kills from junior
Martyna Fiedler, and seniors
Bella Green and
Sadie Giles to take an 18-15 edge. The Argos traded points the rest of the set with a kill from Green securing the first for UP 25-19.
Both teams went back-and-forth to begin the second set with neither side gaining a lead by more than two until a 4-1 run off a pair of kills from senior
Kiyana Faupula put the Argos in front 18-15. The Bulldogs would respond to bring the set within one, but UP scored six of the last seven with a block from Giles taking the second for the Argos 25-19.
The Bulldogs took an early 9-5 lead in the third but the Argos slowly cut into the advantage tying the set at 16. The Argos continued to roll with an 8-1 run to take a 24-17 lead behind a pair of aces from freshman
Araleigh Arnold, and following two kills from the Bulldogs, a block from Faupula secured the third set for UP 25-19, and the match 3-0.
Three Argos reached double-digit kills with Fiedler leading the way with 12, Green tallied 11, and Giles added 10. Senior
Bella Thompson totaled 41 assists, and junior
Kyra Saiers had a team high 16 digs.
The Argos will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 14 when they face the winner of Montana Tech and Dakota State in the semifinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Helena, Mont.
