GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's basketball program defeated Wayland Baptist University 55-36 Saturday night.
The Flying Queens (0-3) scored the first five points of the game but a layup from senior Ainsley Thurber brought the Argos (3-0) within three.
Wayland Baptist controlled the rest of the quarter extending the lead to 10 until a layup with five seconds left from senior McKenna Reggear cut the advantage to eight heading into the second.
The Argos came storming back to begin the second quarter tying the game at 21, and following baskets from both teams, a layup from Thurber put the Argos ahead 26-25 heading into halftime.
Each side traded baskets throughout the third until the Argos ended the quarter on a 5-0 run behind a layup from Reggear and free throws from Brooke Dial to give the Argos a 34-29 edge.
The Argos continued their momentum into the fourth with a layup from Thurber and a jumper from junior Eliannah Ramirez to extend the lead to 12.
The Flying Queens would not get within 10 the rest of the game as the Argos rolled down the stretch defeating Wayland Baptist 55-36.
Senior Ainsley Thurber led the way for the Argos with 13 points and 12 rebounds while junior Brooke Dial added 10 points.
The Argos will be back in action Thursday, Nov. 13 when they host MSU-Northern for the Frontier Conference opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Great Falls, Mont.
