Argos Cruise on Day Two of Big Sky Challenge

BUTTE, Mont. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program cruised past The Evergreen State College and Taylor University winning all six sets to close out the Big Sky Challenge on Saturday.

In the first set of the day, the Argos (2-1) scored two of the first three behind kills from junior Cabry Taylor and senior Franny Martins, but a 4-0 run from the Geoducks (0-3) put The Evergreen State College ahead by two. UP quickly answered with a 7-1 run off an ace by freshman Heather Barbee and a kill from senior Ryann Eddins to put UP ahead 11-7. UP continued their momentum scoring eight straight off kills from Martins, sophomore Kya Stanley, and junior Martyna Fiedler to take a commanding 20-11 lead. UP cruised the rest of the way with a kill from freshman Brooklyn Hillman securing the first set 25-19.

The second set was back-and-forth early until a 9-1 run behind an ace from junior Kyra Saiers and a pair of kills from Martins put UP in front 15-8. UP would continue to roll the rest of the way scoring the final five points of the set off a pair of kills from junior Martyna Fiedler as UP took the second set 25-11.

In the third set the Argos quickly got out in front, scoring six of the first seven, and UP would maintain that edge throughout the set with a block by senior Kiyana Faupula and freshman Trinity Tinsen securing the third set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

Martins and Faupula led the way for the Argos with 11 and eight kills, respectively. Freshman Araleigh Arnold tallied 23 assists and junior Ellie Carlson had a team high 13 digs.

In the second match of the day against Taylor University the Argos (3-1) got out to an eary 7-2 lead behind a pair of kills from Taylor, and despite the Trojans (5-3) bringing the match within one, a 10-1 run from UP behind kills from Fiedler and Martins put UP in front 18-8. The Argos cruised the rest of the set with an ace from Giles securing the first 25-17.

The Trojans started the second set with an 8-2 run but five straight from the Argos off kills from senior Bella Thompson and Giles brought the set within one. Both sides traded runs but neither team could grab a lead by more than three the rest of the set as UP scored five of the last seven to take the second 25-22.

In the third set the Argos started quick getting out to an early 8-3 lead behind kills from Taylor and Giles. The Trojans slowly cut into the advantage cutting it down to two, but four straight from UP gave the Argos a 15-9 edge. The Trojans did not go away, tying the match at 20, 22, and 23 but a pair of kills from Giles secured the final set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

Giles and Taylor both reached double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Thompson tallied 32 assists and 17 digs, and junior Kyra Saiers had the team high with 19 digs.

The Argos will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the CSM Labor Day Classic in Omaha, Neb. UP will face Oklahoma Panhandle State University and #24 William Carey on Friday prior to playing Dakota Wesleyan and #8 IU Kokomo on Saturday.
