OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program won all six sets on Friday sweeping both Oklahoma Panhandle State and #24 William Carey on day one at the CSM Labor Day Classic.
In the first set of the day the Argos (4-1) got off to a hot start scoring six of the first seven points off kills from senior
Ryann Eddins and juniors
Martyna Fiedler and
Cabry Taylor. Following a kill from the Aggies, UP continued to roll going on another 6-0 run to take a 13-3 lead. The Argos cruised the rest of the first set, scoring the final six points behind a pair of kills from Fiedler to secure the first 25-8.
In set two both sides traded points early but a 5-0 run from UP off a kill from senior
Sadie Giles put UP in front 7-3. The Aggies slowly cut into the lead tying the set at nine, but the Argos rattled off a couple 3-0 runs including a kill from senior
Kiyana Faupula to take the second set 25-19.
In the third set neither team could grab a lead by more than three until a 7-2 run from the Argos behind a pair of kills from Giles put UP ahead 15-9. Both teams traded points the rest of the set until a block by Taylor and Giles secured the third set 25-19, and the match 3-0.
Giles and Eddins led the way for the Argos with eight kills apiece and senior
Bella Thompson and freshman
Araleigh Arnold tallied 21 and 13 assists, respectively. Giles was the anchor defensively with a team high 15 digs and Taylor totaled four blocks in the Argos 3-0 sweep over the Aggies.
In game two against #24 William Carey the Argos (5-1) continued their hot start scoring nine of the first 10 points behind four kills from Taylor. Following a pair of points from the Crusaders (4-5) a 4-0 run from UP off a kill from Eddins put UP in front 13-3. The Argos slowly extended their lead out to 13, and despite a late run from William Carey, the Argos secured the first set 25-17.
The Argos continued their momentum into the second set, getting out to an early 7-2 lead behind an ace from junior
Kyra Saiers. The Crusaders slowly cut into the lead, bringing the set within three, but a 4-1 run behind a pair of kills from Fiedler put UP in front 17-11. Both teams went back and forth the rest of the set until a kill from Taylor took the second set for UP 25-21.
In the third set the Argos scored the first 10 points of the match off three kills from Taylor, and UP would not let up the rest of the way scoring eight of the final nine points of the set off kills from freshman
Trinity Tinsen and
Kya Stanley to secure the third set 25-8, and the match 3-0.
Taylor led the way for UP with 12 kills while hitting .667, Thompson tallied 31 assists, and Giles and Saiers tallied 15 and 14 digs, respectively.
The Argos will be back in action tomorrow, Aug. 30 when they face Dakota Wesleyan at 8:00 a.m. and will wrap up the CSM Labor Day Classic at 12:00 p.m. versus #8 IU Kokomo.
