Argos Defeat #8 IU Kokomo to Finish CSM Labor Day Classic 4-0

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program finished the CSM Labor Day Classic 4-0 with victories over #8 IU Kokomo and Dakota Wesleyan on Saturday.

In the first set of the day the Argos (6-1) traded points with the Dakota Wesleyan early, but an 8-1 run from UP behind kills from seniors Sadie Giles and Franny Martins put UP ahead 13-8. The Lions (4-4) would not go away taking a 20-19 lead late in the set, but the Argos answered scoring six of the last seven points of the match off kills from junior Cabry Taylor and seniors Bella Thompson and Ryann Eddins to secure the first set for UP 25-21.

The Argos continued their momentum into the second set getting out to a 14-4 lead behind kills from Eddins and Martins, and UP would maintain that edge the rest of the set with kills from Martins and Thompson taking the second 25-14.

In the third set the Argos put together a pair of 3-0 runs to take an early 9-5 lead behind an ace from freshman Heather Barbee and a pair of kills from Taylor. Dakota Wesleyan answered by taking 19-18 and 22-21 leads, but the Argos scored four the last five points of the match behind a pair of kills from Fiedler to secure the third set 25-23, and the match 3-0.

Taylor and Feidler led the way with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Thompson tallied 36 assists, and six kills and junior Kyra Saiers had a team high 20 digs.

In game two against #8 IU Kokomo the Argos got out to a quick start scoring 11 of the first 13 points of the match behind a pair of kills from Fiedler and Eddins. Both teams traded points until UP ended the set with an 8-3 run including kills from Giles and Eddins to take the first 25-13.

The Cougars (5-4) turned the tables in the second set, scoring five of the first six, but the Argos (7-1) answered with a 5-1 run to take an 8-7 lead. Both teams traded runs but six straight from the Argos behind a pair of aces from Thompson put up in front 15-12. Despite a late run from IU Kokomo kills from Giles and Fiedler secured the second for UP 25-21.

In the third set neither team could grab a lead by more than three until a 6-1 run from the Argos off kills from Fiedler and Eddins put UP in front 21-17. The Cougars responded with a 6-1 run of their own to tie the match at 24, and following points from both sides, IU Kokomo scored the final three points of the set to take the third 28-26.

The fourth set was more of the same with neither side taking a commanding lead until a late 7-1 run from the Cougars put IU Kokomo in front 21-14. The Argos answered with a 3-1 run, but it would not be enough as IU Kokomo scored the final two points to take the fourth set 25-18.

In the deciding set the Cougars held a two-point lead early but kills from Giles, Saiers, Fiedler, and Taylor gave the Argos a 9-8 edge. Following a kill from the Cougars, the Argos rattled off five straight to take a 14-9 lead, and a kill from senior Bella Green ended the set as UP took the fifth 15-11, and the match 3-2.

Taylor led the way for the Argos with a career high 20 kills and Eddins also reached double-digits with 14. Thompson tallied 50 assists and defensively Saiers and Giles added 20 and 19 digs, respectively.

The Argos will be back in action Friday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Helena, Mont. for the Frontier Conference Opener against Carroll College at 7:00 p.m.
