Argos Tie Jamestown 2-2 in Season Opener

JAMESTOWN, N.D. -- The University of Providence men's soccer team saw goals from juniors Liam Vaux and Elian Martinez but ultimately tied the University of Jamestown 2-2 to open the season.

The Argos (0-0-1) maintained possession over the first 15 minutes with each team taking a pair of corners, but neither side could get on shot on goal.

UP continued to control the game and with just over six minutes remaining in the half sophomore Pedro Rodrigues got a good look from just outside the box but his shot was saved by the Jimmies goalkeeper.

With just over one minute remaining in the half the Jimmies sent a ball from midfield over the Argo defenders and the Jamestown attacker beat junior goalie Teddy Benbow to the ball as the Jimmies took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Three minutes into the second half the Argos had a chance when sophomore Lucas Morais got the ball in the box, but his shot was tipped by the defender and easily grabbed by the Jamestown goalie.

UP continued their momentum with a through ball from sophomore Ole Heinsohn to junior Liam Vaux who went back-post to beat the goalie and tie the game at one in the 54th minute.

The Argos did not stop there when just over 10 minutes later sophomore Sherry Msuku Jr. sent the ball ahead to junior Elian Martinez for a one-on-one with the goalie and he found the back of the net to put UP in front 2-1.

The Jimmies would not go away when in the 77th minute a ball from the corner went into the box and the Jamestown attacker's header beat the goalie to tie the game at two.

UP had a chance late with a corner kick with just over a minute left but were unable to get a clean shot at the goal as UP tied the University of Jamestown 2-2 in the season opener.

The Argos will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 2 when they travel to Mitchell, S.D. First touch is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. (MST) versus Dakota Wesleyan.
