BUTTE, Mont. -- The University of Providence women's basketball team fell to #14 Montana Tech 65-58 Friday night.
The Argos (10-6) scored the first basket of the game off a jumper from senior McKenna Reggear, and following nine-straight from the Orediggers (13-1), UP ended the quarter with a 12-0 run behind layups from junior Eliannah Ramirez and freshman Layne Rogel to give the Argos a 14-9 edge.
The Argos pushed the lead out to seven to begin the second quarter behind a layup from junior Brooke Dial, and following a jumper from the Orediggers, a three-pointer from Ramirez gave the Argos a 25-16 lead.
Both teams traded baskets the rest of the half with a layup from senior Ainsley Thurber giving the Argos a 31-24 advantage heading into the break.
The Orediggers opened the second half with a 13-6 run to tie the game at 37, but a pair of baskets from Ramirez and senior Sofia Mokofisi put UP ahead 43-39 heading into the fourth.
Each side went back-and-forth to begin the fourth quarter until a 5-0 run from the Orediggers put Montana Tech ahead 46-45.
There would be three lead changes over the next four minutes until an 8-2 stretch from the Orediggers put Montana Tech ahead 55-49 with just over two minutes remaining.
The Argos answered with a layup from Thurber and free throws from Mokofisi to bring the game within four, but a layup and three-pointer down the stretch from the Orediggers was too much to overcome as UP fell to #14 Montana Tech 65-58.
Junior Eliannah Ramirez led the way for the Argos with 15 points and senior Ainsley Thurber and junior Brooke Dial added 11 and 10, respectively.
The Argos will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 10 when they head to Dillon, Mont. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (MST) versus Montana Western. Â
