GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball team defeated Valley City State 90-89 Friday night.
The Argos (4-19) scored the first four points of the game off a layup from junior
Marvel Chambers Jr. and a jumper from junior
Marcus Lawson but a pair of layups on the other end from the Vikings (9-13) tied the game at four.
Following baskets from both teams a 15-2 run from the Argos behind triples from Lawson, Chambers Jr., and senior
Brendan Redhead put UP in front 21-9.
Valley City answered with a 21-4 run to take a four-point lead, and following a layup from senior
Jakub Lloyd, the Vikings pushed their lead out to five as UP went into the break trailing 39-34.
The Argos opened the scoring in the second half with layups from Chambers Jr. and Lloyd, and following a layup from the Vikings, a jumper from Lawson and free throws from Lloyd tied the game at 42.
The Vikings responded with a 9-1 run, and following a layup from Lloyd, a triple from the Vikings put Valley City State ahead 54-45.
The Argos did not go away with layups from Chambers Jr., Redhead, and Swanson to cut the lead to two.
Each side traded baskets until a three-pointer from Redhead and a layup from Lloyd put UP in front 67-65 with nine minutes remaining.
The Argos continued their momentum with a layup from Chambers Jr. and free throws from Lloyd to push the lead to four, but six-straight from Valley City put the Vikings ahead 73-71.
There would be ties at 73, 75, and 77 but free throws and a layup from the Vikings put Valley City in front 83-78 with three minutes remaining.
The Argos quickly answered with a three from sophomore
Anthony Hobbs and a dunk from Lawson to tie the game at 83.
Both sides would add a basket with a triple from the Vikings putting Valley City ahead by three but a dunk on the other end from Lloyd made it 88-87 with 23 seconds left.
The Vikings added a free throw to take a two-point lead but Redhead buried a triple with 0.9 seconds remaining to give the Argos a 90-89 victory over Valley City State.

The Argos will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 7 when they host Mayville State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Great Falls, Mont.
