GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball team defeated Mayville State 98-91 Saturday night.
The Comets (7-16) scored the first basket of the game but a layup on the other end from sophomore
Anthony Hobbs tied the game at two. Â
Mayville State scored eight-straight over the next four minutes but a pair of threes from senior
Jakub Lloyd and junior
Marvel Chambers Jr. brought the Argos (5-19) within two.
Both teams traded baskets until a 9-0 run from the Comets put Mayville State ahead by 12 but the Argos responded with a jumper from Lloyd and a three-pointer from
Jermaine Rogers II to cut the lead to six.
The Argos continued their momentum with a pair of threes from sophomore
Quinn Swanson and a layup from Lloyd to shorten the Comets advantage to 44-43.
Each side added baskets down the stretch as UP went into halftime trailing 51-49.
The Argos opened scoring in the second half with a layup from junior
Marcus Lawson to tie the game at 51, and following a jumper from the Comets, a triple from Swanson put UP in front 54-53.
There would be three lead changes over the next two minutes until a layup from Lawson and a three-pointer from Chambers Jr. put UP in front 61-57.
The Comets answered with 9-0 run and following a layup from Lloyd a pair of baskets from Mayville State put the Comets ahead 70-63.
The Argos did not go away with a layup from Swanson and a three-point play from Chambers Jr. to make it a two-point game.
Both teams went basket for basket over the next five minutes with neither side getting a lead by more than three but a layup from Chambers Jr. gave the Argos an 84-83 lead.
The Argos stayed hot with free throws from Redhead and a dunk from Lawson to extend the lead to six.
Mayville State brought the game within two with a minute left but the Argos made their free throws down the stretch as UP defeated the Comets 98-91.

Marcus Lawson leading the way with 20 points, senior
Brendan Redhead scored 18, sophomore
Quinn Swanson with 17, junior
Marvel Chambers Jr. with 15, and senior

The Argos will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 13 when they head to Helena, Mont. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. versus Carroll College. Â
