GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program swept Mayville State in the home opener Friday night.
In the first set the Argos (9-2) scored five of the first six points behind a kill from senior
Cabry Badley and an ace from freshman
Bree MacDonald, but the Comets (0-8) slowly clawed back to bring the set within one. Following points from each side the Argos took control with a 9-2 run off kills from sophomore
Kya Stanley and freshman
Brooklyn Hillman, and despite a late flurry from Mayville, a block from Hillman and Badley secured the first set for UP 25-17.
In set two the Argos jumped out to an early 12-4 lead behind a kill from senior
Martyna Fiedler and aces from senior
Isabelle Cahall and junior
Marli Lopeman. The Comets did not go away with a 4-1 run to shorten the advantage to four, but the Argos cruised the rest of the way with a kill from Badley securing the second for UP 25-16.
In the third set both teams went back-and-forth until an 8-1 run from the Argos off kills from Hillman and MacDonald put UP in front 15-11. Each side traded runs but the Argos scored six of the last seven points of the set with a kill from MacDonald securing the third for UP 25-18, and the match 3-0.
Brooklyn Hillman led the way with eight kills while
Bree MacDonald and
Martyna Fiedler added seven kills apiece.
The Argos will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 12 when they host Valley City State at 2:00 p.m. in Great Falls.
