GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's volleyball program swept Valley City State for their fourth straight conference victory Saturday afternoon.
In the first set the Argos (10-2) jumped out to an 11-3 lead behind kills from senior
Martyna Fiedler, sophomore
Trinity Tinsen, and freshman
Bree MacDonald, but five straight from the Vikings (3-9) brought the set within two. The Argos slowly pushed their lead back out to six, and despite a late flurry from the Valley City State, a pair of kills from MacDonald secured the first for UP 25-16.
In set two the Argos doubled up Valley City early getting out to a 12-6 lead off a kill from Fiedler and an ace from sophomore
Heather Barbee, and following points from both sides, a 7-1 run from the Vikings shortened the Argo advantage to 19-18. Both sides traded points the rest of the way, but the Argos scored two of the last three with a kill from Fiedler securing the second for UP 25-22.
In the third set each side traded runs with neither side taking control until three straight from the Argos behind kills from Fiedler, junior
Kendall Picolet, and sophomore
Kya Stanley put UP in front 17-14. The Vikings answered with a 5-1 run to take a 21-20 lead, but the Argos rallied down the stretch scoring the final four points of the set with a kill from senior
Cabry Badley securing the third for UP 25-22, and the match 3-0.
Martyna Fiedler and
Bree MacDonald led the way for the Argos with 11 kills apiece while sophomore
Araleigh Arnold tallied 19 assists and senior
Ellie Carlson added 15 digs.
The Argos will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 18 when they head to Bismarck, N.D. UP will face Bismarck State College at 5:00 p.m. (MST) in the BSC Armory.
