Argos Fall to Corban in CCC Opener

SALEM, Ore. -- The University of Providence women's soccer program fell to Corban University 3-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener Thursday night.

Both sides went back and forth over the first 20 minutes with neither team getting a shot on frame until Gabrielle Nakamura converted a penalty kick for Corban in the 23rd minute to put the Warriors (3-3-1) ahead 1-0.

The Argos (0-4) had a corner kick but no real chance until the 25th minute when junior Peyton Schmauch put a shot on net, but it was saved by the Corban goalkeeper.

The Warriors added a goal in the 32nd minute to extend the lead to two, but with just over a minute remaining sophomore Autumn Apana-Purcell sent the ball down the field to Schmauch who beat the defender and found the back of the net to cut the deficit in half heading into the break.

Corban controlled the beginning of the second half, getting four shots off in first 20 minutes until they broke through in the 64th to put the Warriors ahead 3-1.

The Argos had a chance late off a corner kick from junior Holly St. Germain, but the Argos could not cut into the deficit as UP fell to Corban University 3-1.

The Argos will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they head to Eugene, Ore. for a matchup with Bushnell University.
