GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Darren Lockett went out in style, tying a career high with 27 points on Senior Night in the Argo's 87-71 loss to (6) Lewis-Clark State College. The game was the final regular season contest for UGF and the final home contest for the men, as they'll enter the Frontier Conference tournament as the sixth and final seed.
UGF hung in there with the top team in the conference for much of the first half and a two from the team's other senior, center Daniel Arcau, put the Argos up by one at the 7:47 mark in the first half.
An ensuing Warrior run, however, quickly eliminated the UGF lead and ran the score to 43-33 at the half. In those first 20 minutes it was Makkar, not Lockett, who led the team offensively, scoring 10 points in the first half to lead all scorers. While Makkar played well down low, the Argos struggled to hit from long range, making 1 of 7 3-point attempts in contrast to LC State's 7 of 16.
Thanks to two straight threes from redshirt freshman Michael Harris, UGF managed to work the Warrior lead down to five after the first five minutes but the LC State offense proved too potent to let it go any further than that.
While Arcau and Harris had the shots that marked big momentum shifts in the game, it was Lockett's consistent scoring ability that kept the Argos reasonably close. The senior got the rim almost at will in the second half and also got his mid-range jumper going. Of Lockett's 27 points, 20 came in the second half.
He led an Argo offensive that faired well against the seventh best defense in the country. For the third straight game UGF finished with a positive assist-to-turnover ration and after a cold first half from three, the team hit on 4 of 9 attempts in the second half.
The loss brings UGF's final regular season record to 12-15 (5-13). Their next contest will be the quarterfinals of the Frontier Conference Tournament as the travel to the University of Montana Western on Tuesday, March 1.
