Mistakes and Late Rally Sink Argo Lacrosse

SPOKANE, Wash. – A third quarter run wasn't enough to pull Argo lacrosse ahead of Central Washington University in a 10-4 loss to the Wildcats in the team's first Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League game. UGF was again undermanned, struggling in the latter parts of the game with a few key players.

A handful of unforced turnovers led to a 6-2 deficit after the first two quarters. While the UGF defense played admirably in that time they were faced with a number of CWU fast breaks and unsettled situations off of UGF mistakes.

"Its so mental. Its in between these guys' ears. There are so many things that we work on in practice that isn't translating to game time," head coach Fred Boekel said.

Despite those mistakes, junior attacker Josh Smith managed to score two goals, the first assisted by junior defenseman McKinley Ridenour, the second by senior defenseman Joey Moser. The team then settled down a bit during the half and made a small run in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 6-4.

Then an injury to Ridenour changed the game's momentum and the Wildcats finished the game with four more goals.

With the team's turnover problems in mind, the UGF defense held up well. Goalkeeper Sal Principe played well between the pipes and his defense organized and adjusted to the CWU attack.

"We're playing OK one-on-one, but we're really doing a good job of getting our slides in there," Boekel said. "They're grasping that part of it pretty well. I think our guys are really starting to understand our defensive philosophy."

The loss puts UGF's record at 1-3 (0-1) on the year. Their next contest will come on Sunday, March 13 at 2 p.m. MST against Gonzaga University.
