First Half Lead Dwindles In Argo Lacrosse Loss

SPOKANE, Wash. – A first half lead for Argo lacrosse didn't stick against Gonzaga University, a Bulldog run in the third quarter led to a 17-7 loss for UGF. The loss is the second for the Argos in the Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League of the Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association Division II.

A low scoring first half ended in favor of the Argos, with the UGF team possessing the ball well and scored two goals to take a point lead. That lead was extended to 3-1 early in the second quarter, as the team continued to improve on its offensive struggles in their previous game.

"We got our possessions up to a minute to two minutes, so we were throwing and catching well," UGF head coach Fred Boekel said. "Having a possession for a couple minutes and cashing in with a goal is exactly what we're trying to do and think that was the difference in the second half, we just didn't not possess the ball."

Gonzaga climbed back to take a 5-3 lead heading into half time and then went on a 10-0 run in the third quarter. The Argos struggled to gain possession during that span, particularly in the scrambles for groundballs during the faceoffs.

"We weren't losing the draw on the faceoffs. We were pretty even on that. We just didn't get the groundballs after that," Boekel said. "A lot of that is a fatique factor because groundballs are about wanting it more than the other guys does and I just don't think we had the energy to contest those much."

UGF was once again playing with just 13 healthy players against a team with a roster of at least 20. It was also the team's second game in two days.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldog run ended and the Argos managed to score three more times to put the finishing score at 17-7.

Three of the team's seven goals were scored by junior attacker Josh Smith and two more were added by fellow junior Jordan Daughery. Midfielder Colton Thompson and defender Joey Moser each added one of their own.

UGF's record now stands at 1-4 (0-2). They will get a much needed twelve days of rest before hosting the third annual Copper Cup. The first game of the event will feature UGF against the University of Montana at 7 p.m., in Great Fall'S High School's Memorial Stadium on Friday, March 25. The Argos will then take on MSU-Bozeman on Sunday, March 27 at noon in the Memorial Stadium.
