Late Game Fatigue Costs Argo Lacrosse in Season Opener

LARAMIE, Wyo. – Tired legs and first game mistakes cost Argo lacrosse a chance win its first game of the season, losing to the University of Wyoming 8-7 in overtime. UGF led most of the way, but let up the final three goals of the game including the game winner in overtime.

"In the end we just didn't get the plays when we needed them, and we ran out of gas," said UGF head coach Fred Boekel.

For the first three quarters the Argos were the better team, dominating at the faceoff X and receiving qualify play from starting goalkeeper, junior Sal Principe. Thanks to the efforts of freshman Evan Larson the Argos won 15 of 16 regulation faceoffs, helping the team dominate possession.

When Wyoming did have control of the ball in the first three quarters they were often stifled by a solid UGF defense led by Principe who finished with 14 saves. Offensively, Boekel's squad faced a few hitches in their first live action of the year. Their best source of scoring was junior attacker Josh Smith who accounted for four of the team's seven goals.

"We cashed in on a couple of man-up situations early," Boekel said. "We did have a number of mental mistakes. That was Wyoming's fourth or fifth game and it was our season opener, so I think we maybe weren't quite in came shape yet."

The team's low numbers and still acclimating fitness began to take its toll in the fourth quarter. It was at that point the team's defense began to show cracks. With three minutes to go UGF held a 7-5 lead and despite three man-up opportunities failed to score and let up the two tying goals.

To start the sudden death overtime, the Argos lost a faceoff for just the second time all day. Wyoming held onto the ball for the next minute before scoring the winning goal.

UGF has two more games over the next two days starting with a 7 p.m. contest on Monday, March 7 against Johnson & Wales University in Denver, Colo.
