Smith Scores 8, As Argo LAX Wins Second Game

BOZEMAN, Mont. – A five game losing streak finally came to an end for Argo lacrosse with a 12-10 over Utah State University. The win is the second of the season for UGF and comes just over a month since the team's first win of the year.

"It was a huge win for us, but we really won't find out how big it was until we play our next couple of game," UGF head coach Fred Boekel said. "I told the guys before the game, that we had probably our best week of practice ever and its amazing how when you practice well, it shows up on game day."

The two teams played dead even in the first quarter with three goals a piece. Junior Sal Principe (12) helped keep UGF in the game in the first half despite the Argos being outshot by the Aggies 17-10. Thanks to Principe's efforts and five UGF first half goals, the team went into the half with a refreshingly close score of 6-5 Utah State.

"Sal was awesome in the first half and then we put Jeremy in in the second half because they've both been playing well and he was awesome as well," Boekel said. "We've been outshot in every single game that we've played so I think the big difference for us was our goalie play."

"Jeremy" is freshman goalie Jeremy Smith (31) who stepped into the net and allowed just four goals out of 28 shots in the second half. Behind Smith's shot stopping abilities the Argos were able to enter the fourth quarter tied up at 8.

Junior attacker Josh Smith score two of his eight goals in the final period as part of a 4-2 4th quarter Argo advantage. That advantage finished off the Aggies thanks to the finishing acumen of Josh Smith and increasingly effective team play of the overall UGF offense.

"What was kind of cool is that it wasn't always Josh generating the offense. He got a lot of finishes but out of his eight goals, he only drove the ball three times," Boekel said. "It was fun to see the other guys move the ball and then when Josh gets the ball in his stick, he's usually going to finish."

Smith's eight goals brings his season total to 24, which leads the team.

The Argo's record now stands a 2-6 with a chance to win its first back-to-back games in a matchup against the Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, April 17 in Bozeman, Mont., starting at 11 a.m.
