SURREY, B.C. –
Alex Lowry drove in five of the Lady Argo's nine combined runs over the course of UGF's doubleheader against conference foe University of British Columbie, including a game winning, extra inning homerun. The senior's effort was the difference as Great Falls defeated the Thunderbirds 2-1 (8 innings), and 7-6.
If not for the offensive output of Lowry (14) in Game 1, another stellar complete game pitching performance from senior
Keeley Van Blaricom (6) may have been wasted. Van Blaricom allowed just three hits on the way to her sixth win of year with UBC's one and only run coming unearned off of a UGF throwing error.
That run was scored in bottom of the first and could have been the difference in what turned into well pitched, well defended contest. The only other runs scored in the game came by way of Lowry. To lead off the top of the third, junior
Morgan Robinson (11) singled to left field and advanced to second on a fielding error and then off of a ground out. She then crossed home on Lowry's ground out to tie the game at 1-1.
While Robinson did a lot of the work for Lowry's first RBI, her second was all of her own accord. Stepping to the plate in the top of the eight inning with two outs, the senior outfielder connected with a pitch and sent it over the wall deep in right field for her third homer of the year and second in two days.
Van Blaricom then forced three straight UBC batters to pop out to give UGF its sixth straight win.
Things got more offensive in Game 2, but at the start it looked like it might be a Lady Argo rout. A six-run rally in the top of the second, which included a three RBI double from Lowry, gave UGF a seemingly comfortable lead, particularly after junior
Shelby Abeyta (28) allowed just three hits in the first four innings.
Things got a bit more interesting in the bottom of the fifth when the Thunderbirds started to get a feel for Abeyta's pitching and drove in two runs. Lady Argo junior,
Jackie Thomas (7) droving Van Blaricom in the top of the sixth to answer back but the UBC bats drove in four more in the bottom of the inning to pull within one.
Van Blaricom ventured back into the pitching circle about halfway through the sixth and while three of the six runs were scored on her watch, she eventually stopped the bleeding and then held the Thunderbirds hitless in the seventh.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Lady Argos have now one seven straight games, all of them conference contests and moves the team's record to 15-9 (9-5). The team returns home to host The College of Idaho, who they split with in Idaho early this year, on Friday, April 8 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
