Calgary, Alb. - The University of Providence women's wrestling team had two first place finishers at the 2019 Dinos Invitational Wrestling Tournament at the University of Calgary last weekend.
Yurie Yoneoka finished first place in the 48kg division (106 lbs.) and
Tatum Sparks took first place in the 72 kg division (159 lbs.).
"Those two are seasoned athletes," head coach
Carlene Sluberski said. "They know how to show up and perform. When Yurie shows up and wrestles the way she knows how to wrestle, I think she's unstoppable. Tatum is very talented. She knows what she's doing. She knows how to move and work through her positions."
Iverly Navarro finished second place behind Yoneoka in the 48kg division and
Ivory Ayers finished 5
th behind Sparks.
Jenna Awana finished 4
th in the 63kg (139 lbs.) division while
Gabrielle Hernandez finished 6
th. Anastasia Harden finished 4
th in the 82kg division (181 lbs.), Lana Hunt finished 6
th in the 51 kg division (112 lbs.), and
Maria Enriquez finished 6
th in the 67 kg (148 lbs.).
"I was really happy with all of the girls' performance," Sluberski said. "The girls showed up ready to compete. We've only been on the mats for four weeks. Considering the short amount of time we've been on the mats I was really impressed with the girls and how they showed up, wrestled, and attacked through a lot of positions."
The Argos will travel to Jamestown, North Dakota this weekend for the Jimmie Open starting on Nov. 2.
"Every time we go to a new competition it's an opportunity for us to find what we need to work on and get better at," Sluberski said. "This week going to Jamestown we're going to be using some of the things that we need to work on from last weekend and try to apply them to this weekend."
