WHITEFISH, Mont. – After scoring 17 points and dropping eight assists last Saturday against Corban University,
Emilee Maldonado was named the Frontier Conference Player of the Week.
Maldonado led the Argos to a
86-63 victory over Corban on Saturday. Maldonado didn't miss from beyond the arc, netting five three-pointers.
"I thought Emilee played great taking care of the basketball," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "She was five for five from the 3-point line. She just shot it really well. All the work she's been putting in has paid off. Her decision-making was really good. She was getting the ball to right people in the right places. Her being an upper-classmen now, she shows maturity and is able to take care of the basketball. She's a big part about why we were able to play so well."
Maldonado, the preseason player of the year, is averaging 12.8 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.8 rebounds a game so far this season for the Argos. Her on-court leadership, however, is her greatest attribute, according to Himmelberg.
"Her overall presence of being able to take care of the ball, get us into our offense, she's kind of the heart of what we're able to do," he said. "Anything we need, she can do. She can get to the basket, take a shot, she can draw two people and get a kick. Any one of those things make us a better team. She's just an important piece. She just makes life easy having her out there on the basketball court."
Maldonado is the second Argo to win Frontier Conference Player of the Week.
Jenna Randich was named the
Player of the Week on October 21.
"Emilee got this one," Himmelberg said. "It could have been Bailey or Parker. I thought all of them had a really good game. Emilee had eight assists and made sure everyone got the ball. She shot so well from the field. But at some point in time it's going to be Parker or Bailey or anyone else because we're so balanced. We just have a lot of balance right now."
Maldonado and the Argos will look to continue the momentum on Friday at 12 p.m. when they take on Dickinson State in the first game of the
Bill Himmelberg Memorial Classic.
