Louisville, KY – The 12
th ranked University of Providence men's wrestling team went 2-1 against three Top-15 ranked teams in the National Duals Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.
To begin the day, the Argos faced off against #10 Southeastern, who
gave Providence a 22-18 loss in Prescott, Arizona in December. This time however, the Argos had the better day, defeating the Fire 28-15.
"Even though the score was close when we wrestled them in December, they got the better of us then," interim head coach
Steve Komac said. "The kids really focused on that things that they could control, attitude and effort. That's how you get better at wrestling. They responded well and the kids felt good about that one."
The Argos faced off against the #1 ranked team in the nation next in Grandview.
Clayton Gilliam (133) and
Shonn Roberts (149) won their individual matches, but the Eagles won the rest to win 26-6.
"Our goals were to give our best effort every match," Komac said. "We did that. So then our goal was to win every dual. We tried to win a dual. Regardless of the outcome, we felt like we tried to win a dual. That part felt good."
With a chance to advance to the top eight or be eliminated, the Argos went up against #13 Indiana Tech. Down 14-17 with three matches to go,
Hayden Schrull (184),
John Hensley (197) and
Justin Harbison (285) all won to propel the Argos to victory.
"When you wrestle teams who are next to each other in rankings you can expect a good matchup," Komac said. "They have a very good team. They absolutely have my respect. But we came and competed."
The Argos have a quick turnaround. They'll next hit the mats against #7 Lindsay Wilson at 7 a.m. (9 a.m. ET).
"I'm not the biggest into rankings, but we came into today ranked #12 and are wrestling in the top 8 tomorrow," Komac said. "We outwrestled our seed. That's a good day. "Advancing to the second day is awesome. Hopefully we've been training hard enough that we can do it all again tomorrow."
