LOUISVILLE, Kent. – The 12th ranked University of Providence men's wrestling team finished 7
th in the National Duals Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky this weekend.
"To get five matches wrestling like this is outstanding," interim head coach
Steve Komac said. "To compete at this level that justifies our own talent level. It's been a tremendous weekend."
In the first match of the day, the Argos fell to the 7th ranked Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson 27-12. In their dual for 7
th place, they matched up against #10 Southeastern, whom the Argos had defeated in the first match of the tournament yesterday. This was the third meeting between the two teams this season; the Argos had fallen at the hands of the Fire in December.
"The kids felt it was a rematch of the rematch and definitely the rubber match," interim head coach
Steve Komac said. "You really have to get yourselves up for it. They definitely came out hard."
The heavyweights once again came up clutch for the Argos. Down 14-10 with three matches remaining,
Hayden Schrull (184),
John Hensley (197) and
Justin Harbison (285) all won to give the Argos a 20-14 victory and secure the 7
th place finish.
"It was a little bit of scrappy match," Komac said. "It came down right to the end. We were able to win the last three matches of the dual. We had some great matches against these guys. It was a back and forth match that was exciting."
Shonn Roberts had himself a weekend. Going in ranked third in the 149 lb. weight class, the senior went undefeated on the weekend.
"Shonn has been a leader this entire season," Komac said. "We're very fortunate that he's a veteran of our program. For this year's coaching staff, he's been a huge blessing. He's a workforce and leader every single day in practice. He just competes. Sometimes people put high expectations on top level athletes. We try not to put high expectations on him, but he wants that for himself. His success this weekend was no surprise."
The Argos have another big weekend coming up, as they travel to the Missouri Valley Invitational next weekend.
