GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's wrestling team hopes to build off a successful weekend when they travel to the Missouri Valley Invitational this weekend.
The #12 Argos
finished 7th at the National Duals last weekend in Louisville, Kentucky, going 3-2 against teams that were all ranked in the Top 15 or higher.
The Missouri Valley Invitational is one of the most competitive individual tournaments that the Argos will compete in this season. A lot of the top-ranked teams in the NAIA will attend, as the tournament presents a good opportunity for wrestlers to improve their individual ranking.
"We've been focusing on not having let downs," interim head coach
Steve Komac said. "We are coming off a weekend that felt really good but that was very physically challenging. We've worked on being able to come back and regroup and refocus. We're right back on the road and we want to stay recharged. This is the second of two very high-challenging tournaments in a row. This is one of the most competitive individual tournaments that we're going to."
The Argos currently have six wrestlers
who are ranked.
Shonn Roberts (147) is ranked 3
rd overall,
Casey Dobson (157) is ranked 4
th,
John Hensley (197) is ranked 6
th,
Jordan Komac (165) is ranked 10
th, Boone Giulio (157) is ranked 20
th and
Hayden Schrull (184) is ranked 20
th.
Dobson, Hensley and potentially Roberts will sit out due to injury, which will give some other wrestlers the opportunity to compete against top competition. The Invitational will also give the coaching staff a chance to decide which wrestlers will make the cut for the Conference Tournament.
"We need to get a lot of our kids out there to see how we compete," Komac said. "In the end we have to make some really tough choices on which kids go. Hopefully we run into some of those top ranked kids from other places and see how we stack up. It's going to be a very competitive tournament."
