PENDLETON, Ore. – The University of Providence softball team got it's first win of the season today, defeating Eastern Oregon 10-1 in the first game of their doubleheader. In the second game, the Argos (1-3, 1-3) fell to the Mountaineers (3-11, 3-1).
Determined after yesterday's results, the Argos responded fiercely, scoring five runs in the first inning.
Hanna Tarum and
McKenzie Staats scored in the third before the Mountaineers got on the board. The Argos scored a run in the 4
th and a pair of runs in the 5
th to solidify the victory.
"They came out firing with a little chip on their shoulder," head coach
Joey Egan said. "We had a lot of runs in that first inning and it really set the tone. Everybody was executing different strategies. It was a well-played game. We earned that one."
The second game didn't have the same start. Eastern had a 5-0 lead after the third inning before the Argos got rolling. The Argos were down 3-5 in the 7
th inning with two runners on but couldn't complete the comeback.
"We had two runners with the meat of our lineup coming up," Egan said. "It very well could have gone the other way. We were on a roll."
The Argos finished the weekend 1-3, though Egan was encouraged by her team's improvement in the short span of games.
"You could tell it was our first games out," she said. "They had 10 games under their belt, we had none. That was very very evident. The second game yesterday was much better than the first. Our response today was much better than yesterday. We responded well so we definitely have some pieces to build off of."
The Argos will next take the field in the Dome Tournament in Minot, S.D. The Argos will start off against Valley City State at 4 p.m. on Feb. 29.
