ASHLAND, Ore. – Two wrestlers from the University of Providence women's wrestling team won their weight class at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament in Ashland, Oregon on Sunday. As a team, the University of Providence finished 3
rd out of 6, while Menlo won the championship.
Iverly Navarro (101 lbs.) and
Tatum Sparks (155 lbs.) won their weight classes. Navarro defeated Tianna Fernandez of Menlo in the championship, while Sparks defeated Gladdys Palma of Southern Oregon.
"Man they were just dominant today," head coach
Carlene Sluberski said. "Ivy looked good. She went out and wrestled really well. You could just see all the progress she's making. She's always ready to compete. She did a good job."
"Tatum wrestled really well," she said. "We got to see a little bit more of Tatum's arsenal. She looked solid in the finals."
Yurie Yoneoka (109 lbs.) placed second in her weight class, falling to #1 Alleida Martinez in the first-place match.
Christine Marquez (191 lbs.) also placed second.
Ivory Ayers (170 lbs.) and Maria Elena Enriquez (143 lbs.) both placed third.
"It's a very small concentrated tournament," Sluberki said. "There's really not too many easy matches. It was good for us. It was a good test. There were a lot of good things that happened in our matches. We found more things for us to fine tune and improve on. It was a really rough first round."
The Argos will have a week and a half off before the NAIA Championship Invitational in Jamestown, North Dakota on March 13.
