WHITEFISH, Mont. – The University of Providence women's basketball team received a handful of awards Wednesday morning when the Frontier Conference announced All-Conference teams.
Parker Esary and
Emilee Maldonado both were named 1
st Team All-Conference.
Bailey Cartwright was named the Frontier Conference Newcomer of the Year and was named 2
nd Team All-Conference.
Cameron Cady was named a Champion of Character.
"I'm excited for all our kids that made it," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "It's well-deserving. Any one of those three could have been first-team really. I'm sure they stole votes from each other because they were all so close."
Esary was named 1
st Team All-Conference for the third straight year. She has had a productive junior season, averaging a team-high 15.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Esary led the Frontier Conference in field goal percentage (63.4%) by a wide margin, as Markaela Francis (Rocky Mountain) was second with 54.6%. Esary also ranked 3
rd in scoring and 4
th in rebounding.
Esary was
named the Frontier Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 10. She also
eclipsed the 1,000 point club for her career on Dec. 18.
"Her toughness and leadership the second half of the year was unmatched. She really did a good job leading us through some tough times."
Maldonado was named 1
st Team All-Conference for the second straight season and has been a productive floor general for the Argos this season. She averaged 14.0 points and 4.9 assists on the season. Maldonado led the Frontier Conference in assists per game and ranked 5
th in scoring.
She was
named the Frontier Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 21. She also
eclipsed the 1,000 point club for her career on Dec. 27.
"Emilee does all the little things right on the court," Himmelberg said. "She takes care of the basketball and is able to make big shots at the end of games whenever we need it."
Cartwright, a graduate transfer from Concordia University Portland, was named the Frontier Conference Newcomer of the Year. Cartwright was also five players to be named 2
nd Team All-Conference. She nearly averaged a double-double for the Argos with 13.7 points and 9.7 rebounds a game. She also led the team with 1.5 blocks a game. Cartwright ranked 2
nd in the conference in both rebounds and blocks per game.
"Bailey winning Newcomer of the Year is pretty special," Himmelberg said. "We thought she was going to be the best newcomer coming into the year and she showed that."
Cameron Cady, a sophomore from Lewiston, Ida., was named a Champion of Character.
"Cameron is one of the best character-driven person and hardest worker we have," Himmelberg said. "She brings it every day to make us better."
The Argos, who
won the Frontier Conference Tournament Tuesday night over Lewis-Clark State, will learn their seeding Wednesday afternoon during the NAIA Selection Show at 5 p.m.
