WICHITA, Kan. –
Casey Dobson of the University of Providence men's wrestling team came in second place in the 157 lb. weight class at the NAIA National Championship on Saturday.
Dobson fell behind early in the first period 4-1 to top seed Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer (Grandview) via a takedown. Dobson fought back valiantly and took a 5-4 lead in the third period. With the lead intact, the match got stopped with around 10 seconds left by the official. In the remaining 10 seconds, Rodriguez-Spencer recorded a point to send the match into overtime. Rodriguez-Spencer recorded a takedown in overtime to secure the victory.
"Unfortunately there was a call that we had a pretty big disagreement with," head coach
Steve Komac said. "Credit to Casey. He was up against a very athletic, explosive opponent. After the initial takedown, he came back and competed at an outstanding level."
"You always tell your kids to leave everything out there and compete as hard as you can," Komac said. "He left every single ounce of energy on the match. He left everything out there. I know he's disappointed but I hope he understands how proud of him we are. He battled like a warrior. We couldn't have asked any more of him."
Dobson's second place finish is the highest finish he's had at the national level. This is his third time as an All-American.
Both
John Hensley and
Justin Harbison competed in the second day as well. Both will end their careers as All-Americans.
"You always want your seniors to go out the best they can," Komac said. "Harbison was an All-American for the first time. We're extremely happy for him. Hensley had a great match. He proved he can compete with anybody in the country."
"We're very happy for all three of the guys," Komac said. "They all three had great tournaments. The margin of error in this tournament is very small. Our guys proved a lot tonight. Our team proved a lot. There are guys that didn't compete today that were seconds away from being finalists."'
The National Championships conclude the year for the Argo men's wrestling program. Komac is proud of how the team responded to adversity and came together to give themselves an opportunity to compete at the national level. As a team, the Argos finished 11
th in the nation.
"I think we accomplished some great things a team," Komac said. "We were 14-4 and had seven national qualifiers. We had a National finalist who very well could have been the National Champion. We accomplished some great things this year. We came together and gelled as a team and as a staff."
"I want to thank our seniors for their outstanding leadership this year," Komac said. "This wasn't an easy year for them. We had three seniors who were All-Americans, and then
Shonn Roberts who was more than anything we could have asked for. I also want to thank our assistant coaches, Ty and Cole, for being the best support staff for me this season. They really connected with the kids this season and we couldn't have done it without them."
The season also showcased a plethora of young talent that the Argos have on their squad, including
Jordan Komac and
Hayden Schrull.
"Hayden and Jordan had outstanding senior years," Komac said. "We're excited about the future with them as our leaders."
